GB-A Brisbane Welcomes Leigh Thomas for Work Integrated Learning

With GB-A’s continued support of students, we were fortunate to have Leigh Thomas from QUT join our Brisbane Studio for his workplace integrated learning.

Mike Carter, one of our Associates and student mentors, had this to say, “One of the aspects we most enjoy about having students in our office is the burst of enthusiasm and energy they bring to the workplace, and Leigh brought that in bucket loads! From helping us with mundane tasks, to project research, accompanying us on site visits and joining in with our weekly sketching club it was a pleasure to have Leigh on board!”

Before Leigh left, we caught up for a little Q&A to find out his perspective…

What DID you love most about interning at GB-A?

Aside from the short commute, the team at GB-A was very welcoming and created an amazing environment. The very fact that the entire team sat together, removed barriers from senior staff and management. Once I settled in, I felt I could talk to anybody.

What has been the best advice you have received?

Following an interaction with construction admin on site, Mike plainly stated, “it’s all about people”. A key quality in this profession is one’s ability to create and maintain healthy relationships. These connections are key to every stage of an architectural project, both in and outside of an office.

What surprised you most about working in an office?

My initial feelings involved thoughts of the mundane, but my time at GB-A has proved otherwise. The work environment was very casual and as such I didn’t feel locked into my desk. So, I guess the freedom to come and go (within reason) was a pleasant surprise. This ultimately fostered a space full of collaboration.

What is something you've learned that you'll be putting into practice as you further your career?

As a soon-to-be graduate, there is just as much opportunity to learn during practice as there is at university. Learning to be open to new knowledge and techniques, without applying preconceptions, will allow me to adjust to and grow in any foreign work environment.

It was a pleasure having you Leigh and we wish you every success in your career!
